Conference on Higher Education Computing in Kansas

What is CHECK?

The Conference on Higher Education Computing in Kansas (CHECK) is an annual gathering of information technology professionals in post-secondary institutions in Kansas to present, discuss, and learn about new technologies and current issues in providing IT services to the higher education community. CHECK is sponsored by the Regents Information Technology Council (RITC) and coordinated by the Information Technology and Services Advisory (ITSA) subcommittee. Hosting the event rotates among the member institutions.

Sessions cover a wide variety of timely topics in a variety of formats that include an invited keynote, panel discussions, and individual presentations. It is a valuable time to hear how others around the state are addressing issues common to all of us and to network with colleagues. An evening dinner and social time offer additional opportunities for more informal interactions.

All Kansas higher education institutions are encouraged to participate; 2-year, 4-year, public, private, and technical.

History of CHECK

The first official CHECK conference was held on May 25, 1972 at Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University). It grew out of a series of ad hoc conferences organized by the Kansas Regents computing center directors during 1970, 1971 and early 1972. The last of these was February 10 at Kansas State University where the name CHECK was adopted for subsequent conferences. The organization behind CHECK, RTIC, was formerly the Kansas Regents Computer Advisory Committee (RCAC).

Originally CHECK was a one day conference. The two day format started in 1995 when Kansas State University held a special one day security conference on May 18 immediately ahead of the usual one-day CHECK conference on May 19. Following the 1995 conference the two-day format became the standard format for the CHECK conference itself. At about the same time the conference was expanded to include Kansas colleges and universities outside the Regents system. The host school has generally remained at a Regents school, although in 2005 CHECK was held at Washburn University in Topeka.
